Why should I become a Qualified Medical Interpreter?

Federal law mandates that Limited English Proficiency (LEP) patients have access to a Qualified Medical Interpreter in their preferred language. In order to comply with the law and avoid penalties, as well as to maximize compensation, medical providers have been increasingly requesting Qualified Medical Interpreters.

The use of such interpreters has improved communication, resulting in fewer errors, a reduction in the risk of medical malpractice, an improvement in health outcomes, and greater patient satisfaction. Because of a chronic shortage of interpreters throughout the country, practitioners are in high demand. Medical Interpreting has therefore become an increasingly popular and high-paying career over the past several years.

Going forward, many of iTi’s healthcare clients will only allow us to use Qualified Medical Interpreters for their assignments.

What are the minimum requirements to work as a qualified medical interpreter?

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Have proof of bilingualism and literacy through a validated language proficiency test.
  • Provide a certificate of completion for a professional interpreter training course of at least 40 hours.

What is a language proficiency test?

A language proficiency test is an oral and/or written test that assesses an individual’s degree of fluency in a language. If you have not yet taken a proficiency test, we may ask you to complete one before taking the course. If you are a contracted interpreter with iTi, you have already passed our in-house language assessment and don’t need to take it again.

What is the difference between the certificate received after successfully completing the course and Medical Interpreter Certification?

Both credentials are recognized in the medical industry but are distinct from one another.

  • Students are regarded as Professional Qualified Medical Interpreters once they have received a certificate of completion upon completing a 40-hour training course and passing the final assessment exam.
  • To become a Certified Medical Interpreter, one must take and pass a written and oral examination from either the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) or the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI).

What are the steps to becoming a Certified Medical Interpreter?

  • Complete and pass a language proficiency test.
  • Complete 40-hours of healthcare interpreter training.
  • Pass a certification examination administered by either The National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) or the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI).
