The Tagalog language, informally known as Filipino, is classified as an Austronesian language and is spoken by more than 70 million people worldwide. Most of the native speakers can be found in the Philippines and has over 9 different recognized dialects. As an Austronesia language, it is a distant relative to Indonesian and Hawaiian as well.
Tagalog was declared the official language in the Philippines in 1897. Also during this time in the 18th century is when the first dictionary of Tagalog appeared written by Paul Klien a Czech Jesuit missionary.
